  • Insights gained during the COVID-19 pandemic have shown how vulnerable we are to contagion through indoor air, but the pandemic also revealed many new solutions to better ensure indoor air quality. In this course, we examine the role of humidity in indoor air quality and its impact on air pollutants. However, masonry architecture, both historical and contemporary, has been left vulnerable to water—the single most damaging element to masonry in our environment.   • Life-safety systems encompass both passive fire-protection features, like compartmentation and firestopping, and active ones, such as sprinklers and alarms. Portable fire extinguishers are an integral part of life-safety systems and must meet code-mandated number and placement requirements in most building types.   • Due to their durability, low operational cost, and sustainability, metal roofs are gaining popularity in both commercial and residential markets. Owner expectations for this product family have increased as well and now include heightened aesthetics and long-term performance. While metal roofing systems are certainly up to these challenges, when they fail, the results are costly. Consequently, it is imperative designers have full knowledge of metal roof design and detailing. This course covers the top ten problems metal roof designers face and describes how these problems can be prevented through proper design.

  • The construction of residential and commercial buildings that use less energy to operate and are long lived is a key part of sustainable design. Insulated concrete forms (ICFs) provide the necessary U-factor, airtightness, resiliency, and durability for all building types. Insulated concrete forms in residential and commercial construction projects offer excellent thermal performance and reduced energy consumption and operating costs, while maintaining a very comfortable and healthy interior environment.   • When the asphalt fumes, open flame, and kettles that accompany hot-applied roofing are not permissible, cold-applied roofing is an option. There are a variety of types of cold-applied roofing that offer easy portability of materials to the roof, smaller roofing crews, ease of application, and a low-VOC option.   • White roofs made of PVC (vinyl) can reflect three-quarters or more of the sun's rays and emit 70% or more of the solar radiation absorbed by the building envelope. Despite protecting and keeping buildings cool in all climates around the world for decades, misconceptions about the energy impact of cool roofs still exist. This course uses the fundamental science behind cool roofs to address alleged issues concerning the performance of cool roof products.

  • In many climate zones, the heating and cooling of outside air (OA) is one of the largest energy loads and contributors to building emissions. Traditional commercial HVAC designs based on the Ventilation Rate Procedure (VRP) rely on large volumes of outside air to maintain acceptable indoor air quality, often resulting in oversized HVAC equipment and wasted energy. Adding to this, good indoor air quality is no longer just a matter of meeting code but is now seen as a necessity for business continuity, improved learning outcomes, and employee productivity. In this course, we will examine ASHRAE Standard 62.1, a recognized standard for nonresidential ventilation system design, and its Indoor Air Quality Procedure (IAQP), which allows for the use of air cleaning technology to offset outside air for a more efficient ventilation system design. We will review the requirements and calculations for this procedure, showing the impact on indoor air quality and energy use, and present a number of case studies. We will also show how IAQP used with air cleaning can help achieve LEED® v4 BD+C: New Construction and O+M: Existing Buildings and WELL v2™ certification.

  • Concrete is one of the most widely used building materials throughout the world, and as such, it is in everyone’s best interest to consider more sustainable options. This course provides an overview of the properties of slag cement.
